Buy it yesterday, 300 shots taken, lot of macros, first impression :
S850 is good for :
- good and fast focusing (assist lamp in the dark, fast on macro etc..)
- good macro mode (min = 2.3cm wide)
- powefull flash
- sreen is visible even a sunny day
- very silent zooming
- smooth zooming control
- fast power up ( a bit longuer if flash is on)
- very good autonomy (with Hybrio 2100mAh AA sized bat, more that 300 pics + some videos with editing and deleting )
- MPEG4 movies, you don't need to compress it later
- good hi iso (iso 400 is fabulous, good NR, iso 800 and 1600 are a bit noisy but sharp, iso 50-100-200 are a bit blurry due to NR)
- high apperture
- some funny function like adding borders.
S850 is middle for
- the screen overxepose white areas, you always think that it is hilight clipping, but the shot is ok on pc screen.
- if zoom is at max extension, the power down is a bit long
- auto macro works only on AUTO mode, not P mode
- lack of some more button to have a direct acces to manual function (especialy manual focussing)
- no zoom of the center of the preview while manual focusing
- lanscape are not as sharp as I espected (maybe too much noise reduction)
- no real anti shake system (AS)
- tele macro mode (it gives a 10cm wide image at 40cm, but without AS, normal macro mode is better)
- no wide angle
- no auto AF on movies
- Zooming is working in movie mode, but the focus is set at the first frame, not later. I don't manage to force it by pausing and restarting.
- a bit too high, a bit too large, a bit too deep, a bit too heavy (200gr with battery and card, R5 is 175 with battery and card)
- self portrait with flash is a bit overexpode (not too much, just a little)
S850 is bad for
- nothing is bad enough that I don't recommand it
Something about apperture :
You can have a sharper image if you don't use f/2.8 and min aperture.
f/2.8 is a bit soften, it's normal.
f/max is a bit soften too, this time, it seems to be the thinkness of the diaphragm hole that gives a little more difraction, like with all other compact cameras.
