1. Minor adjustments in LR: White Balance adjustment, Crop/Straighten fix, exposure adjustment etc. Then opened photo in Photoshop.
2. Darken the background: Curves Adjustment Layer: Select Curves Darken Preset: Mask the Subject using a black brush
3. Brighten Subject: Curves Adjustment Layer: Select Curves Brighten Preset: Invert Mask: paint subject using white brush
4: Brightened the eyes using Curves
5: Black & White Adjustment Layer set to Color blending mode with low opacity to take some redness/overall saturation out of skin.
6. Hue/Saturation adjustment layer adding a color boost to pop the subject: Invert Mask: Paint in parts of subject you want to pop (eyes, clothing, hair, etc.) using white brush.
7: Dodge & Burn layer to make the subject pop. There are a lot of different techniques for dodging and burning. The way I usually do it is make one curves layer for highlights and a separate one for shadows and use a very soft brush on a low opacity so you can have a nice buildup. Then when I'm finished painting both masks, if needed I'll select the each mask and blur it a little bit so it blends a little nicer. As for the blurring amount it's really all about personal taste so I don't really have an exact number.
8: For the Cross Processing effects I use Nik Color Efx Pro and used one of the Cross Processing Presets. I masked this effect for the background only. But if you don't have Color Efx Pro you can Cross Process using a Curves Adjustment Layer, Color Balance Layer, etc.
9: I duplicated the Cross Process layer and put it at a lower opacity and masked in the subject. The reason I did this was because subject was turning way to blue for my liking when I had the Cross Process layer affecting the whole subject.
10. I desaturated the background a little bit by using a Hue/Sat Adjustment Layer, then masked the subject back in.
11: Selectively sharpened the eyes using Smart Sharpen.
12. For the sharpening I've been kind of experimenting with it and what not and I've been using this method:
A. I don't really flatten my image till the end if I even flatten at all so I hit Command+Option+Shift+E to make a merged copy of all my adjustments and then duplicated it (but if you did flatten then you can just hit Command+J twice). Leave the Layer 1 Copy visibility off for right now.
B. On the first background copy which should say something like Layer 1 (make sure it's the one under Layer 1 Copy) I use the Unsharp Mask filter with a big radius and small amount. Radius: 60 and Amount: 20 has been working really well for me lately but again it's all about personal taste. What the Unsharp mask layer does for me is adds some nice local contrast to make the subject really pop. I mask in the subject using different brush opacities so I can make some parts of the subject pop more then others.
C. Now make the Layer 1 Copy layer visible and changed the blending mode to Soft Light. Then I use the High Pass Layer with a radius of 10 pixels (but again it's all about personal taste). What this does is make the detail pop even further. Again I selectively mask out different parts of the subject to make some parts pop more then the other.
D. Most of the time end up lowering the layer opacity for each layer in case it looks overdone to me or if I see any halos on the edges.
13. I do my final contrast adjustments using Curves.
14. Sometimes I'll add a vignette but only if I feel like the photo could benefit from it.
I hope this helps :)
----------------------------------------------------------------
1) First, I opened this image with adobe lightroom (in my case LR 3.2) for some adjustments like:
- Saturation: -11
- Black: +7
- Sharpness: +11
2) Open the image with Photoshop (in my case PS CS5).
- Duplicate layer (Press control or cmd in mac + J)
- More sharpness on the eyes and lips.(Mode: normal, intensity: 50%)
- Dodge&burn for the face and hair (Middle tones; about 15% opacity for the face and about 45% for the hair).
- A little bit sharpness on the jacket and also dodge&burn the jacket (Middle tones; about 50% opacity).
- Blend layer (Press control or cmd in mac + E)
- Duplicate layer (Press control or cmd in mac + J)
- Add High Pass filter only in the face (about 10 pixels)
- Blend mode - Soft light + Opacity about 40-60%.
- Image/adjustments/color balance/add yellow touch (about 4 or 5).
- Finally, add canvas size if you want and signature.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The workflow:
LR adjustments for colour correction
• White balance adjusted - Temp and Tint to give a natrual look
• Recovery adjustment's if needed for the blown out areas
• Camera calibration adjustment's such as red and blue saturation
Image opened from LR to CS4 - I use Layer mask's for nearly every layer I adjust
• Layer duplicated and Selective background darkend
• Cross processed using curves or Color Efex pro - Method L05
• Adjustment's for eyes
• Facial adjustment using the dodge tool for darkening and lighting (eg: Under the eyes lightened)
• Selective saturation
• Colour adjusted using Vibrance and Curves
• Contrast and level adjustments
• Selective sharpening
• High Pass filter - Radius of 10 pixels and layer mode changed to soft light
• High Pass layer masked and selective areas applied
• Final Crop and border applied to taste
• Saved back to LR and exported for usage
