The fact of being a photographer resides above all in the idea of a project. Then comes a well-organized and targeted efficient work. I don’t believe in photography schools. First : each one has to look at the most pictures as possible everywhere to cultivate your eye in books, magazines, exhibitions… including painting and all visual arts, to understand how they are made, but the most important is to foresee your own life and visual desires. For this you must precise your wills and work on your own feelings in order to develop them, make choices of directions to which fields. Ask many questions finding the write masters in the chosen fields to cultivate them to learn by trusting time.
Try to shoot at least as good as your favorite images, feature stories…. It takes time and waist lots of films to find your own eye, your own way. Every experience is a good teaching. Ask yourself if taking pictures is for your own personal development or for the giant public and the clients. The choice of the camera is not so important, lenses are. The technique is quite simple after all, especially with the automatisms today and numerical enhancing. Lighting is more to be learnt.
As a traveling photographer, I would advise that no one regrets for his carefulness, no pictures deserves high risks. Each trip is a different approach where security comes first. Hide your cameras and don’t look alike a photographer which has become in the last decade a potentially aggressive person to the people, so take time to meet on a human level and move slowly and appropriately to be forgotten in order to shoot without aggression. Take time to find your own way to move around safely for you and your equipment. Choosing a driver, I usually take time to establish rules with him: never over speed, never pass without visibility, take safe time so I can spot images on the way and if I get scared I apply a agreed fine to the fee. I usually never offer my eyes to the person before or after taking a picture so the people doubt I shot their image. In most countries a proper model release should be signed with the person for using the picture after.
