Боб Карлос Кларк: част от интервю за Practical Photography от 1994.
What's the first thing you can remember photographing?
When I was about eight I photographed a large, gone-to-seed potato which i thought looked like a dinosaur.
What photographic innovation would be of most use for you?
Something like a titanium Pentax 6x8 camera with a built-in winder, Polaroid facility and perfect autofocus. Otherwise a scratch resistant Polapan, or some creamy, old-fashioned, black&white chlorobromide paper.
What's the best advice you've been given?
Be attuned to your instinct and follow it.
Who would you most like to photograph?
Right now i would like to make a giant print
of Naomi Campbell's mouth. It would also be amusing to shoot John Major as "Man in a Polyester Suit" after Mapplethorpe.
In your "Styx"exhibition you featured a graphic photo of female genitalia called "Alpha". Why?
Pompously speaking, Alpha's about the famous legend associated with a river, birth, sex and death. But, in fact, it was included for other reasons- not least as a monumental tribute to the owner, the very beautiful lover of a thousand men or more. I like the idea of haplesss men, doomed by desire to be ingested by gigantic female sex organs.
What era of history would you most like to have been part of? And why?
Anytime I could have raped and pillaged with buckskin boots on, and a clear conscience.
(Politically correct vigilantes note this is pure phantasy).
Do you believe in God?
I don't believe in much I can't see. If God exists, he has certainly got a full repertoire of nasty practical jokes.
Which person would you most like to be seen with?
A composite replicant comprising the Abba singer, Agnetha Faltskog's bottom, circa 1974; Naomi Campbell's legs, Cindy Crawford's legs, and topped off with Bridgitte Bardot's head at 17.
What do you say to your critics?
Bullocks. But thanks for thinking of me.
What's your biggest cock-up?
The day I switched the darkroom light on
with 15,000 pounds of unfixed films sitting on the bench.
What's your favourite movie?
At the moment- "The Piano".
What's your favourite past-time outside photography?
Scouring scrapyards.
What will you do when you retire?
I would like to emulate my late, great friend
Norman Parkinson who died in the sun, on the job.
It's all over and you're giving St Peter your sales pitch. Why should he let you in?
Because I've done what I was designed to do
100%, and I'm not the biggest arsehole I know.
Have you anything to declare? (other than your genius)
Yes, when I was 10 years old, I shot a robin
14 times. For 33 years I have been haunted by robins.
