" Looking to commence full-scale sales, Saburo Uchida considered a new brand name for the laboratory's cameras. Compared with "Kwanon," which stemmed from Goro Yoshida's religious beliefs, Uchida wanted a more modern-sounding name that reflected the image of a high-class camera. The name "Canon" was finally chosen. The word had a number of meanings, including "scriptures," and suited the image of precision processing, where accuracy was paramount. Furthermore, since the pronunciation resembled that of Kwanon, linguistic compatibility was not a problem. The name change, therefore, was smooth.
On June 26, 1935, a trademark application was made for the name "Canon" as a brand that signified "photographic machines, tools, and parts thereof." The trademark was registered on September 19 of the same year. The application was made by Saburo Uchida, and the registration number was 278297. The typeface for the name was the work of a designer specializing in advertising. It was distinguished by an inward bend in the upper tip of the "C"-a feature that is still reflected in today's logo."
