No matter how much we scorn it, kitsch is an integral part of the human condition.
Milan Kundera (b. 1929), Czech author, critic. The Unbearable Lightness of Being

kitsch, irony & sex
противно на някой мнения у форума, аз си мисля, че не (само)иронията води до деградация, а деградацията до ирония

The framework of kitsch and irony that I propose forces into sharp relief several conclusions about the work of Milan Kundera. First, it shows Kundera's special, compassionate understanding of kitsch: no matter how ironic one is (as author or character), kitsch inheres in the human condition and should be accepted. To reject kitsch outright is to be tempted to fall into kitsch (as Ludvík does); to be aware of it (as Sabina is, and Kundera himself) is the best way to guard against its shortcomings. Aesthetic judgment must have a humanistic component. Second, we see more clearly the important way in which Kundera is utilizing irony to further his novelistic agenda of expanding the borders of the novel to include "non-novelistic genres" (such as the philosophical essay on kitsch) as well as more problematic relationships of author to narrator. To understand kitsch in Kundera is to understand Kundera's novelistic process. Finally, the kitsch-irony relationship in Kundera's works has not been fully examined and in itself shows his development, from The Joke to The Unbearable Lightness of Being, as an author capable of ranging over the full spectrum from ironic distance to sentimental indulgence to complicated mixtures of both.

Before starting a biography of Milan Kundera, it seems appropriate to quote from his excellent novel Immortality:

"Biography: sequence of events which we consider important to our life. However, what is important and what isn't? Because we ourselves don't know (and never even think of putting such a silly question to ourselves) we accept as important whatever is accepted by others, for example, by our employer, whose questionnaire we fill out: date of birth, parents' occupation, schooling, changes of occupation, domicile, marriages, divorces, births of children, serious diseases. It is deplorable, but it is a fact: we have learned to see our own lives through the eyes of business or government questionnaires..."

[Damage]

http://www.filmref.com/directors/dirpages/images/damage1.gif The German concept of liebestod (explored by such varied artists as composer Richard Wagner and author Thomas Mann) proposes the idea that true love cannot be attained without the complete abandonment of the will and submission to suppressed passion (hence, the literal translation of love and death). From the novel by Josephine Hart, Louis Malle's Damage is a harrowing, emotionally charged, modern-day adaptation of this theme. Stephen Fleming (Jeremy Irons) is a reserved, middle-aged government minister who, during a cocktail party, is approached by an enigmatic young woman named Anna Barton (Juliette Binoche). She introduces herself as his son Martyn's (Rupert Graves) "friend". From the initial encounter, it is clear that there is an immediate attraction between them. Despite Stephen's marriage to Ingrid (Miranda Richardson), and Anna's relationship with Martyn, they become involved. She reveals to him that she is "damaged", the object of her brother's incestuous obsession, who committed suicide rather than face losing her. Accustomed to order and structure, Stephen is overwhelmed by the intoxicating Anna and, for the first time in his life, his passion is out of control. Soon, he, too, is obsessed with her, follows her to Paris, and arranges a rendezvous: "I can't see past you". The discovery of their affair shatters Stephen's fragile, idyllic existence. Binoche's portrayal of the alluring, mysterious Anna is intriguing. Note the cocktail party scene where her nonverbal presence alone suggests that there is an understanding between them. Damage is a riveting, highly sensual, and well-crafted film about love, betrayal, and emotional destruction.

http://www.filmref.com/directors/dirpages/images/damage1.gifhttp://www.filmref.com/directors/dirpages/images/damage2.gif The mystery of the elusive Anna is an important aspect of the film (as Catherine is in Francois Truffaut's Jules and Jim). She is a seeming paradox: victim and aggressor, vulnerable and fiercely independent, guarded and uninhibited. Visually, her enigmatic persona is developed using dark clothing and minimal room lighting. She speaks with a slight, obscure accent, attributed to her extensive travels as a child in diplomatic circles. Symbolically, there is a pivotal scene involving a spiral staircase, which seems to reflect her puzzling history and Stephen's moral descent. We are drawn to her in a futile attempt to see past the image, and understand who she is. However, like Stephen Fleming, we are left hollow after the eviscerating experience... with nothing but memorable images on which to reflect.
