"И had older 70-200 f/2.8L and didn't care for it. The 200mmf/2.8 is sharper, lighter and faster--superb image quality. I wanted to share a secret about fixed focal lengths. It'sbetter to walk than zoom! If you can't back-up or move in,change lenses! When the day is done, image quality winsover convenience. Optically, it much easier to design a fixed focal length. This one is quite sharp wide open. Focus is very fast. Avery subtle virtue: attached to a 30D or EOS 3 / EOS 1N ithas a nice center of gravity. Awkward responses have a wayof spoiling the shot.Also, being light and nicely balanced, there's no need for atripod collar if you are using a tripod. The rule of thumb shutter speed = 1/focal length = 1/200seems to apply. With a steady hand, maybe 1/125. Sinceimages are quite sharp at f/2.8 (though depth of field is narrow), it'sa versatile lens. If you're not in a hurry, feel free touse a tripod!Even tiny amounts of camera movement significantly degrade sharpness--so many pro photographers think of a tripod astheir best friend, not a burden. The lens is much better than I expected--it has excellentcontrast, color fidelity and resolution, and good feel. Most frequently used telephoto."
